Message Without Internet
Chat Local is a free offline messaging app that sends encrypted texts using Bluetooth mesh networking — no WiFi, no cell service, no servers, no account needed. Works at festivals, while camping, during emergencies, and anywhere connectivity fails.
Why Chat Local?
The offline messaging app built for real-world situations where traditional messaging fails
Works Completely Offline
Send and receive messages using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) mesh networking. No WiFi, no cellular data, no internet connection, and no cell towers required. Works in airplane mode with Bluetooth enabled.
AES-256-GCM Encryption
Every message is encrypted by default, deterring anyone listening on the airwaves. For anything sensitive, add a conversation password (Pro) for true end-to-end encryption — only your group can read those messages, even relay devices can't, and a lock icon marks every message that was actually sent encrypted.
Bluetooth Mesh Relay
Messages automatically hop between nearby devices, extending range far beyond a single Bluetooth link. The more Chat Local users nearby, the further messages travel — creating a resilient peer-to-peer network with no single point of failure.
Zero Account Required
No sign-up, no phone number, no email, no personal data collected. Download, pick a name, and start chatting in seconds. Your privacy is protected because we never collect personal information.
Nearby Conversation Discovery
Automatically discover active conversations happening around you. Preview messages before joining, or create your own for others to find. Like a local radio scanner for text messages.
Battery Efficient
Built on Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), the same technology used by fitness trackers and AirPods. Minimal battery impact compared to keeping WiFi or cellular active.
Completely Serverless
No cloud servers, no data centers, no third parties. Messages travel directly between devices and are stored only on your phone. Uninstall the app and all data is gone — zero digital footprint.
Invite With a Code
Show a QR code from any conversation and have someone point their camera at it — they land straight in the join screen. It needs no internet or cell service at all, so it works in the middle of the desert. No reading conversation names out loud across a crowd.
Delivery Confirmations
Every message you send reports what actually happened to it — sending, sent, or received by however many nearby devices acknowledged it. When nobody is in range, Chat Local tells you instead of pretending the message went through.
Keeps Working in Your Pocket
Chat Local keeps discovering nearby devices and reconnecting while the app is in the background and your phone is locked, so you can put it away and stay reachable across a campsite, a festival, or a trail. Just leave it running in the background rather than force-quitting it.
Customizable Experience
Personalize with custom themes, chat backgrounds, and a distinct bubble color for every person in a conversation. Pro users also get message search, chat export, profanity filter control, notification keywords, and more.

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about offline Bluetooth mesh messaging
How does Chat Local work without internet?
Chat Local uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to create a decentralized mesh network between nearby phones. Messages travel directly from device to device using Bluetooth — no WiFi, no cell towers, no internet, and no servers involved. When a message needs to reach someone beyond direct Bluetooth range, it automatically hops through other Chat Local users between you, creating a multi-hop mesh relay network.
What needs an internet connection, and what doesn't?
Offline: sending and receiving messages, mesh relay, delivery confirmations, conversation passwords, message search, chat export, and QR-code invites. None of it touches a network.
Needs a connection: downloading the app in the first place, buying or restoring Pro, and opening a shared invite link (the QR code doesn't). Anything you've already bought keeps working offline for the full period you paid for — so buy before you head somewhere without signal.
Is Chat Local free to use?
Yes. Chat Local is free to download and use with core features including Bluetooth mesh messaging (50-character messages), default encryption, 2 active conversations, and 20-message history. Pro is available as a subscription ($4.99/month or $29.99/year) or a one-time lifetime purchase ($59.99, early adopter discount). Pro unlocks unlimited conversations, 400-character messages, 500-message history, password-protected end-to-end encryption, message search, chat export, themes and backgrounds, user blocking, and faster sending.
How do I get a friend into my conversation?
Open the conversation, choose Invite People, and show the QR code — they point any standard camera app at it and land in the join screen with the conversation already filled in. This works with no internet or cell service, which is the whole point: it's built for the festival or campsite where nothing else works. They do need Chat Local installed. If they don't have it yet, share the link instead — that opens a page offering the app, so it needs a connection on their end. Invites never carry the conversation password: that is shared separately, in person.
Does Chat Local work when my phone is locked or in my pocket?
Yes. Chat Local keeps scanning for nearby devices and reconnecting while the app is in the background and the screen is off, so messages keep arriving with your phone pocketed — the normal state at a festival or on a trail. Bluetooth needs to stay enabled, and iOS may deliver background messages slightly less immediately than when the app is open on screen. One thing worth knowing: leave Chat Local running in the background. If you force-quit it, iOS stops delivering Bluetooth events and messages won't arrive until you reopen it.
How do I know if my message was delivered?
Chat Local shows a delivery confirmation under your most recent message: sending, sent, or received by the number of nearby devices that acknowledged it. If nobody was in range, it says the message wasn't delivered instead of showing a false success — so you know to move closer, or wait for someone to come into range.
Can I try Pro features before paying?
Yes. Locked themes, chat backgrounds and sender colors can be tried inside the app before buying — tap one and you see it applied to your real conversation, then it reverts. There is no free trial of the paid plans. If you would rather not subscribe at all, the one-time lifetime purchase unlocks everything with no recurring charge.
What is the range of Bluetooth mesh messaging?
Direct Bluetooth Low Energy range is typically 10-30 meters (35-100 feet) in real-world conditions, up to about 100 meters with clear line of sight, and less through walls or obstacles. However, Chat Local's mesh networking means messages can hop through up to 5 intermediate devices, potentially extending range significantly. The more Chat Local users in an area, the further messages can travel.
Do I need an account or phone number?
No. Chat Local requires zero personal information — no account, no email, no phone number. Just download the app, pick any display name, and start chatting. This makes it ideal for privacy-conscious users who want to communicate without leaving a digital identity trail.
Are messages encrypted?
Yes, in two tiers. Every message gets AES-256-GCM encryption by default using keys built into the app — that deters anyone eavesdropping on the airwaves, but treat it as strong obfuscation rather than secrecy. For anything sensitive, create a password-protected conversation (Pro): true end-to-end encryption where only people who know the password can read messages — even devices that relay them can't — and a lock icon marks every message that was actually sent encrypted. One thing that's visible by design: conversation names and sender display names are broadcast to nearby app users (that's how nearby discovery works), so name conversations accordingly.
Can I use Chat Local during natural disasters and emergencies?
Yes — this is one of Chat Local's most important use cases. When cell towers are destroyed, power grids are down, or internet infrastructure fails, Chat Local continues to work because it only needs Bluetooth (powered by your phone's battery). Emergency management professionals, preppers, and disaster preparedness advocates use offline mesh messaging as a critical backup communication tool.
Is Chat Local a good prepper communication app for grid-down scenarios?
Yes, as the reach-your-group layer of a layered comms plan. Chat Local needs no license (unlike ham or GMRS radio), no extra hardware (unlike Meshtastic or goTenna), and no infrastructure — messages travel phone-to-phone over Bluetooth and relay through up to 5 devices, working as long as the phones have battery. It works in airplane mode, which greatly extends battery life in an outage. It is not a way to reach 911 or anyone beyond mesh range — pair it with radio or satellite for distance. See the full grid-down communication guide.
How does Chat Local compare to walkie-talkies?
Chat Local is a modern alternative to walkie-talkies with several advantages: it's silent (text-based, not voice), encrypted (walkie-talkies broadcast openly), requires no extra hardware (just your iPhone), supports group conversations, and messages persist so you can read them later. Direct range is shorter than a dedicated radio (typically 10-30 meters), but mesh relay extends it by hopping through other users.
Does Chat Local work in airplane mode?
Yes. Turn on airplane mode, then re-enable Bluetooth. Chat Local works perfectly because it only uses Bluetooth — no WiFi or cellular needed. This is ideal for flights, areas where you want to disconnect from the internet, or situations where you need to conserve cellular battery.
Does Chat Local store data on servers?
No. Chat Local is 100% serverless. Messages are stored only on your local device and transmitted directly between phones over Bluetooth. There are no cloud servers, no data centers, and no third parties that ever see your messages. Uninstalling the app permanently removes all data.
What is the best app for communicating at Burning Man?
Chat Local is ideal for Burning Man because Black Rock Desert has no reliable cell service. It uses Bluetooth mesh networking to send encrypted messages between iPhones without any internet, cell towers, or extra hardware. Just download before you arrive, pick a name, and your camp can communicate across the playa. The more burners using Chat Local, the further messages travel through the mesh network.
How do I find my friends at a music festival without cell service?
Download Chat Local before the festival. Create a conversation with a name your group agrees on (like your camp name). Everyone with Chat Local in Bluetooth range can send and receive messages — no cell service, WiFi, or internet needed. Works at Burning Man, Coachella, Bonnaroo, Electric Forest, EDC, Lightning in a Bottle, and any event where cell towers are overwhelmed or nonexistent.
How is Chat Local different from Bridgefy, Briar, or Meshtastic?
Chat Local differentiates with AES-256-GCM encryption on all messages by default (not just opt-in), a custom binary protocol that's 50-60% more efficient than JSON-based alternatives, nearby conversation discovery with message preview, zero account requirements, and a clean freemium model. Unlike Meshtastic, no extra hardware is required. Unlike Briar, it focuses on ease of use with no technical setup needed.
